Evaluation Criteria
| Criterion | What it may include |
|---|---|
| Nutrition profile | Protein, fiber, added sugar, sodium, calories, fats, carbohydrates, and other category-relevant nutrients. |
| Ingredients | Primary ingredients, protein and fiber sources, sweeteners, fats and oils, additives, fortification, supplement ingredients, and transparency. |
| Formulation | How the product is composed and whether the formulation fits its stated purpose. |
| Serving size | How a serving is defined and whether different serving sizes distort comparisons. |
| Scientific evidence | Quality, relevance, consistency, dose, duration, design, and limitations of evidence related to important claims. |
| Testing and certification | Identified manufacturer testing, independent third-party testing, certification records, or government information where available. |
| Safety | Recalls, warnings, regulatory information, or other material safety context. |
| Price and value | Price per package, serving, or another meaningful basis where relevant. |
| Availability | How widely and practically a product can be purchased. |
| Convenience | Preparation, portability, storage, and serving practicality. |
| Intended use | How well the product fits the specific use case the article is designed to answer. |
| Alternatives | Whether another food or product may be a better fit for a different budget, goal, or preference. |
Category-Specific Methodology
Shake Nutrition does not force every product into one universal formula. A protein powder, cereal, yogurt, meal replacement, supplement, snack, or packaged meal serves a different purpose and may require different criteria. Not every ranking uses a numerical score, and numerical weighting should not create false precision.
Best-for-Use-Case Recommendations
“Best” means best for a stated use case, not universally best for every reader. Relevant use cases may include higher protein, higher fiber, lower added sugar, lower sodium, plant-based formulation, budget, convenience, ingredient simplicity, or another clearly defined consumer priority.
Supplements and Meal Replacements
Supplements
Supplement evaluation may consider active ingredients, dosage, formulation, evidence relevant to the ingredient and dose, label transparency, testing claims, certifications, safety information, price, and limitations. Reviews are not personalized supplement prescriptions.
Meal Replacements
Meal-replacement evaluation may consider calories, protein, fiber, carbohydrates, fats, added sugar, sodium, micronutrients, ingredient composition, serving practicality, price, availability, and intended use.
Testing and Hands-On Evaluation
Shake Nutrition distinguishes manufacturer testing, third-party laboratory testing, certification programs, government testing, and original testing actually performed by Shake Nutrition. We do not imply that Shake Nutrition conducted hands-on or laboratory testing when it did not.
A product can still be evaluated using current labels, research, manufacturer documentation, testing records, certifications, pricing, availability, and other appropriate evidence.
Samples, Affiliates, and Commercial Separation
A free sample does not guarantee coverage, a positive review, a recommendation, a high score, inclusion in a ranking, or a higher ranking position. Affiliate links may appear in commerce content, but compensation does not determine editorial conclusions or rankings. Direct and programmatic advertising are not active, and sponsored rankings, paid “best” labels, and paid editorial scores are not sold.
Product Selection and Exclusions
Products may be selected based on relevance, reader interest, category significance, market availability, nutrition profile, formulation, price, reliable product information, comparison value, and reader usefulness. Inclusion does not automatically mean endorsement.
A product may be excluded when it does not fit the category, reliable current information is unavailable, it has been discontinued, availability is too limited, it does not meet a disclosed threshold, or a material safety or regulatory issue changes its relevance.
Updates and Corrections
Rankings may be reviewed after reformulations, new products, discontinuations, price or availability changes, new testing or certification information, new scientific evidence, recalls, safety issues, or identified factual or methodology errors. Companies may submit current factual documentation, but documentation does not guarantee a higher ranking or more favorable conclusion.
